Biography:
Janet Stevens is a gubernatorial appointee, non-profit steward, small business owner, and municipal government leader who has served her community and New Hampshire residents for more than 28 years. Governor Christopher Sununu appointed her to the Commission on the Seacoast Cancer Cluster Investigation and the Board of Mental Health Practices, where she served as an advocate for access to mental health services as well as clean water.
During the initial phases of the COVID crisis, Stevens performed critical services to provide access to mental health care by enabling telehealth reimbursements, advocating for accelerated insurance credentialing, and streamlining the online process to identify available providers.
Her work continued during the pandemic as she assisted New Hampshire businesses with applications for state and federal funds, access to PPE and insurance coverage, and proper placement with the Re-Opening Task Force. She successfully advocated for minority owned businesses denied access to Main Street Fund, due to language barriers.
Janet has served in leadership roles for numerous New Hampshire based non-profit boards representing health, education, preservation, and performing arts since 1992, including AIDS Response Seacoast, Strawbery Banke Museum, Prescott Park Arts Festival and The Music Hall. Her fiduciary oversight and fundraising skills have supported and sustained these and other non-profits. In addition, in municipal government, she served as commissioner and chairperson of the Rye Recreation Commission for 13 years. During her tenure on the commission, she expanded services, safety protocols and innovative programs, which benefited participants and residents.
Born and raised in Needham, Massachusetts, she is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Following graduation, she launched a career in public affairs/public relations at Cone Communications, New England's largest, independent firm at the time. Following a move to Portland, Maine, she worked for the McDonald O'Meara agency, as well as Pierce Atwood Scribner, as a public affairs manager. For the last 13 years, she has served as president of JL Stevens & Associates, a boutique strategic marketing firm.
Janet and her husband Dr. Bob Stevens are Seacoast residents, where they raised two children. A former competitive distance runner, she enjoys skiing the mountains of New Hampshire and hiking local trails with her dogs.
